- W2506519390 abstract "Natural hosts of SIV avoid AIDS despite high viral loads and lifelong infection. Studies comparing the immunological characteristics of natural and non-natural hosts have revealed multiple mechanisms by which natural hosts avoid the progressive decline of immune function associated with pathogenic lentiviral infection. Both sooty mangabeys and African green monkeys, the most well-studied models of non-pathogenic SIV infection, down-modulate SIV entry receptors on important immune cell populations to protect them from infection and preserve long-term immune function. The protection of these cells is important not only for preserving recall responses to secondary infection, but also for maintaining immune homeostasis, mucosal barrier integrity, and lymphoid tissue architecture. In this chapter we will discuss the formation and differentiation of CD4+ T lymphocyte subsets, including the central memory subsets based on both phenotype and function. We will analyze recent findings suggesting that infection of distinct subsets of the CD4+ T-cell lineage by SIV protects natural hosts from progressive immunological decline." @default.
