- W2506659061 abstract "Purpose: The purpose of the proposed study was to determine underlying differences in behaviors associated with increased risk of breast cancer between healthy women living in Mexico (i.e. Mexican women) and healthy Mexican women living in the U.S. (i.e. Mexican-American women). Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women worldwide and the leading cause of cancer death. The average annual age-adjusted incidence of breast cancer is higher among women in the U.S. than among women in Mexico, and within the U.S., incidence differs by race/ethnicity. Hispanic women in the U.S. have a lower incidence of breast cancer than white women, but breast cancer risk increases with increasing duration of residence. The increase in breast cancer incidence that occurs with migration is likely attributable to changes in environmental rather than genetic factors. Once Mexican women migrate to the U.S. and with increasing duration of time living there, their reproductive and other lifestyle behaviors are likely to mirror those of white women in the U.S. Methods: Healthy Mexican controls (n=1,074), ages 33–72, were selected from a population-based case-control study of breast cancer in Mexico conducted from 2004–2007. Healthy Mexican-American women (n=281) of similar ages were identified from the 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Summary statistics of demographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors and reproductive/hormonal factors were computed separately for each population and the similarity of participants was assessed by comparing the populations with respect to these factors. Chi-square tests were used to assess differences in categorical variables; ttests were used to assess differences in continuous variables. Results: Mexican and Mexican-American women were similar to one another with respect to age, education and marital status. Average BMI for both populations was 30 kg/m 2 ; nearly half of the women in each population were obese (BMI >30.0 kg/m 2 ). Mexican-American women were significantly more likely to report any alcohol intake in the last year (67.9% vs. 56.1%). Women were similar to one another with respect to age at menarche (13 years), age at menopause (46 years), history of ever being pregnant (95%), age at first birth (21 years) and number of live births. However, Mexican-American women were significantly more likely to report having ever used both oral contraceptives (60.3% vs. 44.7%) and postmenopausal hormone therapy (38.5% vs. 14.6%). Conclusions: Although women from these two study populations were largely similar to one another, some important differences were identified. Mexican-American women reported a greater frequency of both oral contraceptive and postmenopausal hormone therapy use, and a greater frequency of recent alcohol intake, factors which have been associated with increased risk of breast cancer in previous research. Compared to healthy controls from a population-based case-control study in Mexico, healthy Mexican women participating in the U.S. NHANES study had a higher prevalence of several reproductive and lifestyle behaviors associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer." @default.
