- W2506722569 abstract "First performed in 1905, Major Barbara was one of the most notable plays written for the Royal Court Theatre under the Vedrenne-Barker management of 1904–7. It has remained a deservedly popular, and frequently performed, play. Intellectually, it is a robust, challenging play which decisively and memorably defines the dilemmas which perennially confront reforming idealists when they come to grips with the realities of power in society. But Shaw achieves in Major Barbara a happy marriage of intellectually sophisticated and broadly popular ingredients. Like many of Shaw’s characters, the romantic heroine cum Salvation Army Major, Barbara, epitomizes a type, and has become part of the folk mythology of the twentieth century.1 Her successors in real life joined the Aldermaston rallies, or protested against the Vietnam war and apartheid in Africa, or left upper middle class homes to serve in organizations for the relief of suffering in the Third World. Equally impressive and enduring as a dramatic image is Shaw’s portrait of the munitions maker, Undershaft. No other writer of the twentieth century has so authoritatively portrayed the type of the unrepentantly successful, engaging but ruthless business tycoon as does Shaw in this work. Major Barbara is a play which, once read or seen, permanently affects the landscape of the mind." @default.
