- W2506894875 abstract "As the previous chapter noted, internet-based communication strategies can be used to moderate negative social experiences and manage sexual health risks. In this chapter, I will take the case of HIV biotechnologies to argue for ‘hyper-technologisation’ or the mingling of bio- and communication technologies. Such hypertechnologisation is apparent in the area of sexuopharmacy, where internet-prescribing is said to ‘un-moor’ the Viagra cyborg from traditional forms of prescriber/patient relations (Marshall, 2002). As noted, Viagra itself has been considered as a possible risk factor in research regarding HIV prevention (Halkitis & Green, 2007). Here I want to argue that the relationship between bio- and communication technologies is in part forced into existence by the imperative of HIV prevention. In particular, I want to address practices such as the so-called, internet-mediated ‘serosorting’, which concerns the notion of using communication technologies to choose a partner of the same HIV antibody serostatus. Such notions will be used to consider how, along with communication technologies, bio-technologies help mediate sexual practices. There have been general calls for closer attention to the social aspects of technologies used in the prevention of HIV, such as using short-term treatment to prevent HIV transmission after sexual exposure (Imrie et al., 2007)." @default.
