- W2507372020 abstract "The postulation of an inverse relationship between social class and powerlessness has been central in writings on alienation since the works of Marx. Results of the present study, based on 240 middle to upper class farmers and 1,031 mostly poverty-level farm workers, suggest that powerlessness is associated with income and perceived socio-economic deprivation as expected, but not position in the system of production. Although farmers have much greater political-economic power than workers, they do not view themselves as having greater power. Results thus fail to support the hypothesis that power of position is associated with the perception of power among incumbents. It is suggested that bureaucratic and reference-group processes influence such perceptions, and hence should be considered in future research on powerlessness. The hypothesis of an inverse relationship between social class and alienation has been central in writings on alienation since Marx. As Seeman notes (1959), the precise aspect of alienation which Marx had in mind is powerlessness. Because worker and capitalist occupied fundamentally different positions in the system of production-namely, one owned the means of production and the other didn't, the worker's position of power was eroded and he became increasingly alienated (i.e., powerlessness) as a result. Hence differences in position of power are viewed as leading to differences in perceived, felt, or subjective power. The hypothesis has been extended by Haggstrom, who postulates that power differences between middle and lower class positions determine differences in internal personality (1964:214215), so that lower-class persons feel they have less power than those above them. [Haggstrom. contends further that the psychological characteristics that are often associated with being poor (e.g., short-term planning, hostility, and" @default.
