- W2507696353 abstract "The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has developed white tropical lowlands maize inbred lines from diverse sources of germplasm since 1979. However, a systematic study has not been conducted to classify these lines into heterotic groups. Thirty-four lowland maize inbred lines were chosen and crossed to two inbred line testers representing the tropical and temperate heterotic pattern established in West and Central Africa (WCA). Two trials each composed of 60 line x tester combinations were evaluated at six environments in the wet season and at two environments under well-watered and drought stress conditions in the dry season. Mean squares for GCA and SCA effects were significant for grain yield in the wet season as well as under well-watered and drought stress conditions. The GCA x environment and SCA x environment interactions were not significant for grain yield in the wet season as well as under well-watered and drought stress conditions. Only 11 of the 26 inbred lines consistently had positive or negative GCA effects across the three growing conditions. The tester inbred lines exhibited contrasting GCA effects and they were able to classify some of the tropical lowland inbred lines into two heterotic groups based on SCA effects and testcross mean grain yields in each growing condition. Most of the inbred lines showed consistent heterotic response in at least two of the three growing conditions. Since more than 40% of the lines were not separated into the two heterotic groups in each growing condition, a combination of more than two divergent testers with molecular markers may have to be used to separate these lines into well-defined heterotic groups." @default.
