- W2507887936 abstract "The aim of this article is to analyse the strategies employed by the Rothschilds up to 1940 to gain control and limit competition in the international non-ferrous metals markets. It examines how they opted for inelastic demand products of highly concentrated supply which lent themselves to market control (mercury, nickel, lead, and copper and sulphur) by taking administrative monopolies (mercury from the stateowned Almaden mines in Spain) or by controlling the leading businesses of the respective markets (Le Nickel, Penarroya, and Rio Tinto). The article also analyses how in some cases the family was able to gain worldwide monopolies, and how in other cases they promoted collusive oligopolies with the competition in any number of forms in their quest to maintain profitability and steer well clear of any competition. his article offers a wide range of examples of monopolistic practices and cohesive agreements exercised by a single developer for much of the contemporary history of the non-ferrous metals industry. We characterize and analyse the Rothschilds’ strategies to control the international markets of four products: mercury, lead, nickel, and pyrites (copper and sulphur), and the different responses they adopted to respond to market variations for more than a century. The novelty of this study lies in the idea that the search for agreements or the establishment of pure monopolies was a premeditated condition for the Rothschilds to be present in those markets. In other words, price intervention through various means was the norm, and competition was the exception. In short, this article seeks to tie in two aspects of economic history that have undergone substantial development in recent years. On the one hand, there is the role of the initial investors in the birth of the modern business and its subsequent development, and on the other, the historical development of market agreements against competition in the area of commodities. In the first case, the reference studies are still those of Chandler, who established the axiom of progressive divorce between ownership and control in large, increasingly professional, American companies, and the tardy extension of this model to other economies. 2 However, this hypothesis has been questioned by historians of" @default.
