- W2508261401 abstract "SUMMARY A STUDY is made of certain designs of Latin square type, namely, Latin squares with (a) a column added, (b) a row and a column added, and (c) a column added and a row omitted. Recommendations are given for the analysis of data by a method leading to an unbiased test. It is shown that sufficient randomization is obtained by writing down a possible configuration of plots and permuting rows and colutmns at random. IT is often urged in favour of Latin squares that variation can be eliminated in two ways, by rows and by columns, and certainly this can be a very useful feature. Thus, in a laboratory trial to compare the percentage of a certain element in a series of substances, rows can represent analysts and columns the occasions. Latin squares were originally introduced as an experimental design for use in agricultural trials, not only because both rows and columns may be important, but because it is often difficult to decide which is going to be more effective. With Latin squares, however, there is always the restriction that rows and columns must be equal in number to one another and to the treatments. This intractibility of Latin squares can be serious where the rows and columns are previously determined. Several examples can readily be thought of in horticultural research and doubtless in other fields also. (1) A randomized block experiment is no longer required for its original purpose, and it would be convenient to add a new set of treatments of a sort unlikely to interact with those already applied. This could be done, using blocks as rows and original treatments as columns (Pearce & Taylor, 1948), but only if these two sets of plot-groups were equal in number. (2) An area 100 ft. by 150 ft. is to be planted with trees that should be spaced 25 ft. apart. Using one-tree plots there must be four rows and six columns. In this instance the Latin square device of rows and columns would be particularly advantageous if it could be used, since outside trees may differ not only from inside ones but also from each other according to the headland they face, e.g., a' row facing the prevailing wind across an open" @default.
