- W2509465747 abstract "During the final quarter of the nineteenth century Nathaniel S. Shaler, forefather of American geography and Dean of Harvard's Lawrence Scientific School, devoted much time and effort to analysing what he understood to be America's race problem. His 'scientific' treatment of the theme starkly reveals the ease with which contemporary scholarship could be manipulated to foster a racist mentality. Shaler's fusion of current biological, anthropological, historical and geographical theories enabled him to advance an interdisciplinary analysis of the Black, the Jew, the American Indian, and the European peasant. This, in turn, encouraged him to advocate a variety of 'solutions' to the ethnic question encompassing eugenic control, immigration restriction, and an idealized religious ethic. In many ways Shaler can be seen as representative of the scientific paternalism of the New England Zeitgeist at the turn of the century, and an examination of his ideas, therefore, provides some insights into the relations between science, race and ideology during America's Gilded Age." @default.
