- W2509781704 abstract "This chapter explores the meaning of descent and descent relationships in the social organization of Early Iron Age Greek communities. Early classical kinship groups as defined and described by nineteenth-century classical scholarship served as prototypes for anthropological kinship typologies. In the late nineteenth century, ethnologists drew on early classical models and comparative ethnographies to create schemes of progressive human social evolution. The chapter considers the family and kinship systems of Greek communities in the Early Iron Age, one can engaging with an intellectual history in which the very kinship systems in question sit at the origins of the modern study of kinship and family. Genealogies were tools of social recognition and differentiation. Individuals and their households sought and invented the family in ways that would enhance or coincide with their prestige and legitimize their power within the community or the polis, and hence, their interest in descent." @default.
