- W2510062020 abstract "The ‘jaune’ movement had a relatively short-lived political and syndical existence, lasting from 1899 until 1912. In contrast with their adversaries, the ‘rouges’, the ‘jaunes’ advocated the forging of peaceful relations with the employers, class collaboration and the defence of private property. Consequently, they were openly hostile to the use of striking favoured by the Confederation Generate du Travail (CGT) and welcomed profit-sharing schemes sponsored by the employers. Despite the fact that contemporary observers to the movement recognised their apparent significance as a political force, history has remained curiously silent about the ‘jaune’ experience. Most studies, when they evoke the ‘jaunes’, dismiss them as an organisation of strike-breakers, funded by the patronat in return for their help in sabotaging the strikes organised by the ‘rouges’.1 This reflects, perhaps, the refusal of the historiography of the trade union movement in France to recognise the fact that compelling evidence exists to support the contention that a large number of its members were ‘guilty of defecting to the enemy’. That certain sectors of the working class were social-traitres to proletarian ideals, that the ‘jaunes’ were the proletarian basis of counter-revolutionary ideology in Belle Epoque France has led to a situation of self-censure, and a dismissal of the movement as a marginal force comprising strike-breakers and unscrupulous individuals on the payroll of the bosses, royalists and other reactionary, nationalistic forces.2" @default.
