- W2510143154 abstract "Use of narrative metaphors (e.g., story) in moral theory makes possible an account of public worship as the ground for Christian moral life. By enabling us to picture how our moral agency acknowledges the living God, such worship grounds the principle that Christian moral endeavor takes shape in God's living presence. The community professes that, in its worship, its heritage of images of human life under God- creation, redemption, church, and eternal life- effectively reshapes our lives. Thus worship empowers us to see and to shape our moral agency as a response of praise to God as Creator and Lord. During the past decade, discussions of Christian ethics have been increasingly marked by the development and refinement of concepts based upon narrative metaphors such as story, parable, and drama.1 Development of these concepts and exploration of their relation to more traditional categories of moral analysis has already been sufficiently elaborated to show how narrative metaphors can give a particularly enlightening focus to discussions of ethics. These metaphors acknowledge a peculiar dual character of our relation to events in our moral lives: we are both agents of these events and narrators of the moral significance of these events and our agency in them. A narrative metaphor such as story aptly expresses the coherence we try to give our discursive accounts of lived moral endeavor while at the same time it respects the incomplete perspective we often have of that endeavor while we are in its midst (Hauerwas, 1974:71-76). These metaphors and the concepts based upon them also give due recognition to the role imagination plays in shaping concrete moral existence. They hold promise of enabling us to give an account of Christian moral JRE 7/2 (1979), 239-248" @default.
