- W2510173897 abstract "The link between male fertility and general health status has been suggested. Previous studies reported higher rate of medical comorbidities in patients with male factor infertility (MFI). However, most studies were based on aggregate administrative and registry data, comorbidity indices with limited application to young infertile men, and suboptimal control groups. The goal of this retrospective case-controlled study was to compare major medical comorbidities in the cohort of infertile and fertile men utilizing granular data from individual medical records. Retrospective medical records study of 389 men with MFI and an age matched control group of 399 men with proven fertility, who presented for vasectomy consultation. Medical histories were self-reported by detailed male infertility questionnaire and additionally corroborated by direct questioning at the time of evaluation. Medical comorbidities including hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), hyperlipidemia (HLD), coronary artery disease (CAD), hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, autoimmune diseases, and asthma were documented in both groups. Chi-square analysis was conducted at the 95% confidence level (α = .05) to analyze the differences in co-morbidities between the fertile and the infertile group. Multiple regression analysis was also performed to examine the relationship between male infertility and the number of co-morbidities. Age and BMI were used as covariates. There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of HTN, DM, HLD, CAD, Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, Autoimmune disease, asthma, or cancer between the group of men with MFI and the control group (Table1). There was no statistically significant relationship between the number of comorbidities and male infertility ( p = .43). Our study demonstrates that male infertility is not associated with the higher rate of medical comorbidities. These results do not support the hypothesis that infertile men are less healthy than fertile men. Granular data from individual medical records provides more reliable information regarding medical comorbidities than nonspecific general databases.Additional large-scale multicenter longitudinal studies using appropriate individual databases are warranted to evaluate the association between male reproductive and general health status and to test the concept that aberrations in man's reproductive fitness can serve as a biomarker for somatic health.Tabled 1Table 1.
