- W2510631208 abstract "An examination of the pollination of Lonicera periclymenum L. suggested that out-crossing was mediated primarily by bumblebees and other insects. Pollen was found on up to 94% of the examined stigmas, but most fruit set was due to self-pollination caused mainly by passive movements of the reproductive organs. Only bumblebees having a long proboscis are able to extract nectar, and the range (proboscis length) of male bumblebees (Bombus hortorum L.), which were frequent visitors, correspond to the amount of nectar left in unbagged flowers. The visits of male bumblebees may be an exploitation of available nectar resources in flowers of L. periclymenum in marginal habitats, where the adapted pollinators are scarce. The behaviour of male bumblebees parallels that of nocturnal moths giving possibilities of long distance pollen dispersal compensating for the high level of self-pollination." @default.
