- W2510818269 abstract "There remain the differences that the leaves of Thuidium tend to have short and papillose cells and a strong single costa, whereas Hylocomium has a short double costa (apart from H. pyrenaicum, whose leaves however are not always unicostate) and elongated leaf cells, not papillose or only so by extension of the upper end of the leaf cell. Goebel would also maintain a difference in the paraphyllia, the significance of which is somewhat doubtful and which perhaps needs further confirmation. The case for inclusion of the Hylocomiaceae within the Leskeaceae as a supreme development does not seem then proved, but at most a possibility to be borne in mind, and I should leave the family independent for the present, but containing only the genera Rhytidiopsis and Hylocomium, the latter to include, as a matter of course, Fleischer's Hylocomiastrum and Loeskeobryum. Before leaving the paraphyllia question let us note that the family Climaciaceae with two genera has abundant paraphyllia not dissimilar to those of Hylocomium and the fact might suggest an inference of relationship. The leaves in the Climaciaceae do, however, have a single strong costa, and the manner of growth does not seem to be quite the same as in Hylocomium but might perhaps be reconciled to it. Any possible indication of a closer relationship of the Climaciaceae to anything else should be welcome, as the current idea that it stands near the Fontinalaceae has always seemed to the present writer the height of the impossible." @default.

- W2510818269 title "the question arises as to whether the Hylocomiaceae might not be considered a phase of the Leskeaceae and included with it. Hylo- comium has a considerable degree of similarity in manner of growth and branching with Thuidium besides the paraphyllia." @default.
