- W2511422550 abstract "larger river, the Peneios, is only 5 km away. As potential habitats, therefore, we have the rocky hill itself, the plain with its rivers and the nearby uplands of the Pindus, as well as the interior of the cave, capable of providing zones for a wide range of animal species. Animal bone material has been discovered throughout the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic levels, but the sample is problematic. The upper (Neolithic) strata have been subjected to numerous disturbances, including use of the cave as a sheep pen and looting in recent times. The Palaeolithic and Mesolithic faunal sample is very small, largely due to the chemical destruction of bone that has taken place in the central and rear portions of the cave (see FIG. 1 5. 1 ). No bone material whatsoever has been salvaged from these trenches. The presence of calcium and aluminium phosphates, however, suggests that bones were once present but have dissolved (Karkanas pers. comm.) Fortunately some bone material has survived around the edges of the cave and towards the entrance. The range of species in the Palaeolithic group is wide and includes several carnivores. Separating the animal input into the faunal deposits from that of the human inhabitants has been a constant focus of the research, and has to be considered in the Mesolithic also. All of the Palaeolithic material, which has been discussed elsewhere (Newton, forthcoming), was derived from trenches A8 and M9, at the side of the cave. Much of it is in a superb state of preservation, though reduced to small pieces in ancient times. The Mesolithic sample, by contrast, has been derived in small quantities from several trenches in which the thin sandy layer representing the beginning of the Holocene occurred. These trenches are H6, A7, F8, Z6 and a small sample from A8. Even combined, the Mesolithic sample from all these trenches is only 293 bone specimens, of which 60 were identifiable as to species. This represents an identification rate of more than 20%, which is considerably higher than the average for the Palaeolithic fauna. When the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic remains are considered together, only 11% are identifiable. This suggests that the Mesolithic macrofaunal remains, where present, are in a more reasonable state of preservation than the older material. As with the Palaeolithic sample, however, most of the unidentifiable specimens were less than 3 cm long." @default.
