In spite of repeated challenges to Spanish power, Spain's European rivals were unable to occupy any island in the Antilles until well into the seventeenth century. For more than twelve decades, the Caribbean remained little more than a Spanish lake. This meant that Spain had ample time- even if not enough manpower-to consolidate her holdings there. But once Cortez reached Mexico, Spain's interest would shift to the mainland with its vast territories, seemingly inexhaustible stores of precious metals, and massive populations. For some time thereafter, the new Hispanic island possessions were left largely to themselves. Viewed from the present, one sees that this neglect was an early sign of the limits of Spain's energies. As she tried to cope with larger and larger areas and populations so large that eventually they would exceed her strength, Spain was obliged to give ground. At the time, the island colonies gradually became way stations and guard posts, their principal colonial role being to serve as a convenience for the Spanish fleets. The settlements in Santo Domingo, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, which had been tiny even before the conquest of Mexico, lost many of their colonists to the mainland.
