• W251291542 abstract "Young Chicanas/Latinas have a high risk of contracting HIV. However, their risk could be significantly reduced if information about AIDS and HIV is properly disseminated. Although some efforts have attempted to study the relationship between young populations and HIV, few studies have been conducted to study the relationship between Chicanos/Chicanas and HIV contraction. Even fewer projects have examined the above relationship with respect to Chicana/Latina women. A study explored the relationship between HIV awareness information and young Chicana/Latina populations. The model tested was used as a part of a retreat and conference for young Chicanas/Latinas, at which two co-founders, nine mature women, and nine young women were presented. If the model is successful, then the data should show an increase of AIDS awareness information. Data were collected at 3 intervals: immediately before the workshop, immediately after the workshop, and 4 months after the workshop. The pattern of these data is geometric--subjects' knowledge showed a statistically significant increase immediately after the workshop and levels of knowledge were maintained 4 months after the conclusion of the workshop. An alternative model which focuses on the source, barriers that need to be overcome, and strategies that can be employed to assist in educating young, Chicana/Latina women on HIV and AIDS awareness is suggested. Given the proposed model, the gap between AIDS information and behavioral changes can be bridged. (Contains 11 references.)
