- W2514713743 abstract "A sustainable transportation system is safe, affordable and accessible. It connects different modes oftransportation in order to achieve efficient movement. Asustainable transport system is one that is economical andfriendly to the environment. All trips in private and publictransport begin and end with walking. Non-MotorizedTransport (NMT) plays a key role in completion of anyjourney from origin to destination. However, this mode oftransport is not used optimally to enhance sustainabletransport, especially where public transport is concerned. Themain objective of the research was to evaluate an optimalcombination of transport modes for trips made by BMWemployees residing in Ga-Rankuwa north of Pretoria, in orderto reduce cost of transport. The travel behaviour of BMWemployees was investigated by first studying secondary data onthe Municipal Household Survey (MHS) and IntegratedTransport Plan (ITP) of Tshwane City. The secondary datawas supplemented with primary data which was sourced byinterviewing the BMW’s human resources department andconducting trip studies between Rosslyn and Ga-Rankuwa.The trip pattern of workers of BMW was evaluated to knowthe origin-destination, journey period and transportation costof the trips. The movement patterns of the BMW workers weregrouped into four categories. The patterns were subjected tooptimization using linear programming which included thesubsisting movement pattern. The trip patterns developed werebased on relevant literature. The BMW workers’ movementfrom home to work was optimized. Their movement to workconstituted a transportation challenge or problem; and wassolved using simplex technique, a linear programmingapproach. The model was subjected to a sensitivity analysisand the results were analysed. It was found that the mostpatronized transportation mode for the trips between Rosslynand Ga-Rankuwa was taxi. It was further discovered thatBMW workers expended R18.47 averagely on movement fromhome to work through taxis. The recognition of cycling, ameans of movement within short distances, allows foradditional trip patterns as available options for commuters. The integration of cycling as a feeder system to trains resultedin 36% trip cost reduction for the commuters. The researchrevealed that while less than 45% of the employees maycontinue to use the present scenario, more than 55% of theemployees may use a combination of cycling and trains. Thestudy suggested that similar work should be done to coverother economic and important routes in order to encourage theuse of cycling as a link to other transportation modes in otherindustrial areas of the City of Tshwane" @default.
