- W2514919796 abstract "Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease of centrofacial erythema. Excess cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide, is suggested to be important in its pathophysiology. Recently, the presence of vitamin D response element was revealed in promoter area of cathelicidin. The aims of this study were to compare serum cathelicidin level and serum vitamin D level, and to compare cathelicidin and vitamin D receptor expression in the rosacea lesions. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and serum cathelicidin level were measured by the competitive protein binding assay and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. The expressions of the cathelicidin and vitamin D receptor in the lesion were measured with immunostaining-intensity-distribution index. The mean serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of rosacea patients was 30.03nmol/L, lower than healthy Korean average (48.7nmol/L). The mean serum cathlicidin of rosacea patients was 85ng/ml, higher than that of the control group (55ng/ml). The cathelicidin expression in rosacea tissue was significantly higher than that of the control group (5.21 versus 4.03). Vitamin D receptor expression did not reveal significant difference. Higher cathelicidin expression in the lesions of rosacea patients, consistent with previous reports, supports that abnormal inflammatory response of the innate immune system is important in the pathogenesis of rosacea. In contrast to our expectation, serum vitamin D level was lower in rosacea patients, even though their serum cathelicidin level was higher than the control. These results demonstrate the possibility of another pathway increasing serum and tissue cathelicidin levels in the rosacea patients, besides the vitamin D response element pathway." @default.
