- W2515107326 abstract "This paper explores the idea that creative art making cannot, strictly, be taught. A view of art for the curriculum is developed and a conception of creativity as an outcome of rule-following, trial and error, and luck, that denies intention and imagination is critiqued. The conclusion is that imagination and judgment, not themselves governed directly by rules, are necessary in art making. The value of Eastern aesthetics, of skill and spontaneity, to art making and education is explored. Finally, it is agreed that while creativity cannot be taught directly, the teacher can promote various supportive attributes. As with art making, however, the teacher's imagination and judgment are considered vital. Reference is made to the importance, ethically, of being aware of how subjects are being represented in photographs. The paper concludes that besides other educational values identified, art making moves us in the direction of greater awareness, freedom, and personhood." @default.
