- W2515235644 abstract "The objective of this paper is to identify farmers' strategies to adapt to groundwater shortage in vulnerable arid areas of south Tunisia. In the selected area, the potential of rainfed agriculture is very limited and groundwater is the only source of irrigation. With intensive overuse of groundwater signs of groundwater table depletion are starting to appear and farmers are becoming more concerned about water shortage. Based on a survey among farmers, we proceeded with a ‘principal component factors’ analysis followed by a ‘hierarchical clustering’ using Ward's method, in order to investigate different farmers' adaptation behaviour when faced with groundwater shortage. A set of relevant variables were used for this purpose. The cluster analysis generates three groups of farmers based on their irrigation practices, types of irrigation investment, and other related structural variables. A first group is formed by large farmers who combine both expansive strategies, by investing in enhancing groundwater appropriation, and accommodating strategies, by enhancing on-farm management of the available resource. The second type of farmers are small and mainly focus on expansive strategies, while the third group is also composed of small farmers demonstrating purely contractive strategies, referring to reduced scale of farm operation. L'objectif de ce travail est d'identifier les différentes stratégies des agriculteurs du Sud Tunisien pour s'adapter au manque d'eau souterraine due au rabattement de nappes. Dans la zone d'étude (Gabes-Sud), les opportunités liées à l'agriculture pluviales sont très limitées et l'eau souterraine constitue la seule source d'irrigation. Les signes de surexploitation de cette ressource sont donc de plus en plus prononcés. En se basant sur une enquête auprès des exploitants, une analyse des composantes principales complétée par un ‘regroupement hiérarchique’ utilisant la méthode de Ward a été effectuée, afin d'identifier les comportements d'adaptation des agriculteurs qui font face à une situation de manque d'eau souterraine. Un ensemble de variables reflétant le comportement des agriculteurs a été utilisé. Nos résultats ont identifié trois groupes d'exploitants possédant trois différentes stratégies d'adaptation. Le premier groupe constitué de grandes exploitations, combine des stratégies expansives (investir pour avoir plus d'eau) avec une amélioration de l'usage de la ressource au niveau de l'exploitation. Le deuxième groupe est constitué de petites exploitations adoptant surtout des stratégies expansives. Alors que le dernier groupe, constitué également de petites exploitations, s'adapte seulement à travers des stratégies contractives, consistant à diminuer l'échelle de fonctionnement de leur exploitation.
