- W2515394873 abstract "Kohut chose to focus upon one developmental issue, the need to develop a cohesive sense of self and healthy self-esteem. This concept, self psychology, has evolved into a school of thought (Kohut, 1977), and has been further elaborated into a metapsychological study (Atwood & Stolorow, 1984). At the very least, it has increased the awareness of many therapists to their patients' vulnerability to loss of self-esteem and fragmentation of the self. Self psychologists contend that all beings require an experience during early childhood in which the caretaker serves as a selfobject; that is, a phase during which the child is completely dependent upon someone who continually provides the experience that he or she exists solely to satisfy the child's needs. If this phase has not been provided, narcissistic pathology results. It should be noted that even at birth the infant is not a tabula rasa, but instead is a being with operative perceptual processes. Thus, from early infancy the mother and infant are involved in a mutual regulatory system in which the activities of the mother and infant are responsive to one another (Stern, 1985). There are three consistent failures that are of concern when dealing with the child's interaction with the parent who provides the selfobject function. These include the failure: 1) of the parent to realistically mirror the endowments, creativity, and achievements of the child; 2) of the parent to be available as an idealized parent image whom the child can look up to and from whom a sense of well being and strength is obtained; and 3) of the caretaker, and later the peers, to provide a sense of twinship which allows the child to feel like a human among humans. This last situation is akin to Yalom's (1970) concept of the experience of universality." @default.
