- W2515402645 abstract "This chapter focuses on the formation of ordered structures in Paul traps and quadrupole ring traps. Phase transitions characterized by a discontinuous change in the fluorescence intensity may be induced by appropriately adjusting the radio frequency voltage, the detuning, and the power of the cooling laser. The transitions show hysteresis as a function of these three essential control parameters. With the help of three-dimensional molecular dynamics calculations, all the essential features in recent experiments can be qualitatively reproduced, such as the size of ion clouds and crystals, as well as transitions between these two phases. The dynamics of the phase transitions is explored experimentally and numerically in the chapter via time resolved fluorescence spectra recorded for the transients of specific phase transitions. In connection with recent developments in accelerator and storage ring physics, it is demonstrated in the chapter that the quadrupole trap is also a valuable tool for studying specific sections of the machine “lattice.”" @default.
