- W2515869282 abstract "PURPOSE: Discrimination in football (soccer) and lack of ethnically diverse role models among professional football players in the UK, particularly Asian players, has recently gained attention (1, 2). This study investigated young (aged 11-18 yrs) Asian footballers’ perceptions of their own experiences of discrimination in football, and perceptions of professional Asian footballers in general. METHODS: An online questionnaire was administered to 204 football players from 10 secondary schools (11-15 yrs) and colleges (16-18 yrs) in London. RESULTS: Kruskal-Wallis H tests revealed year in school was significantly associated with respondents’ perceptions of their own experiences of discrimination and of Asian footballers in general; Dunn’s post- hoc pairwise comparisons with Bonferoni corrections indicated that players aged 16-18 yrs were significantly more likely to agree with the statements: ‘My skills are not valued due to my ethnicity,’ ‘I am not given the same opportunities because of my ethnicity, and ‘ There are not enough professional football players from my neighborhood’ (p<.001 for all pairwise comparisons). CONCLUSION: College-aged participants, but not younger participants, reported significant perceptions of discrimination and lack of Asian professional football role models. Although these cross-sectional data cannot elucidate the mechanisms explaining these findings, it is possible that young people experience more discrimination and become more aware of a lack of Asian football role models as they progress through school and football training. Future studies should investigate the mechanisms of this perceived discrimination, with interventions aimed to stem discrimination and increase visibility of Asian football players. 1. Bradbury, S.
