- W2516946670 abstract "Abstract This chapter focuses on ethical concerns in trials designed to test safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of vaccines in human participants. Because vaccine trials may involve organizations in high-income countries collaborating with those in low-resource settings, are often implemented in settings with constrained healthcare systems and may involve vulnerable participants (amongst other factors) they involve several ethical complexities. These are outlined here, informed by a popular framework for reviewing the ethics of research protocols. The chapter examines stakeholder engagement, social value and scientific validity, selection of participants, issues of risk-benefit, informed consent, ongoing respect for enrolled participants, ancillary care, and review by research ethics committees. The chapter describes ethical responses being implemented to promote participant welfare during trials evaluating vaccines to address the health needs of deserving future beneficiaries in many resource-limited settings." @default.
