- W2517192012 abstract "distributed throughout its major physiographic provinces. At the time of first European settlement the dominant aquatic environments were well-drained highland streams discharging into lowlands which frequently held marshes and ponds (Miller, 1961). With changes in climate and land use these areas of standing water disappeared; and today few, if any, unimproved permanent lakes remain. Loss of natural water bodies was accompanied by the construction of impoundments, both small recreational reservoirs in the moister uplands and large storage reservoirs in the lowlands. With the exception of Cole's (1963 and 1968) reviews of desert lakes, little comparative information is available on the limnology of Arizona's surface waters. Such information is vital to proper evaluation and management of these valuable water resources, to understand deviations from average or normal conditions, and to develop systems for predicting the expected condition of water bodies yet to be constructed. The purpose of this report is to compare the major inorganic chemical constituents of 23 reservoirs selected to represent the diversity of Arizona's waters. We will also suggest that the aridity of the desert environment has produced predictable geographic patterns of chemical composition. This study was supported by funds provided by the United States Department of the Interior, Office of Water Research and Technology as authorized under the Water Resources Research Act of 1964.
