- W2517367415 abstract "Understanding the connections among Physical Education, physical activity and health is essential. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between participation in Physical Education classes and physical activity levels among Brazilian youth, using data from the School Health Survey. Data collection took place in 2009 and 2012; the target population included students from grade 9. Around 40% of the students had two Physical Education classes per week, both in 2009 and in 2012. In 2012, the Northeast region was the one with the lowest proportion (29.5%; 95%CI 28.2 – 30.8) of adolescents reaching 300 minutes per week of physical activity, whereas the South was the one with the highest proportion (37.3%; 95%CI 32.1 – 42.5). In 2009, figures were higher, both at the bottom (Northeast: 37.7%; 95%CI 35.9 – 39.5) and the top extremes (South: 49.8%; 95%CI 41.9 – 57.7). We found a strong negative correlation (rho -0.84; p<0.001 in 2009 and rho -0.81; p<0.001 in 2012) between having no Physical Education classes per week and the proportion of active adolescents. Despite challenges in terms of infrastructure, lack of materials, low value of the discipline and low salaries of teachers as compared to those observed in other countries, the existence of more Physical Education classes is related to higher physical activity levels among Brazilian youth. Legislation changes requiring three Physical Education classes per week are recommended." @default.
