- W2518135160 abstract "Objective: To determine serum level of resistin in migraine patients. Background: Migraine is a complex neurological disorder. Change (increases or decreases) in the levels of some molecule levels, can be connected to migraine pathogenesis. Studies have been performed to find potential biomarkers in migraine. Biomarkers can be used as factors of existence or migraine progression and for screening and treatment response. They can also aid in identifying mechanisms or existing environmental factors stimulating migraine.Resistin is a Cytokine peptide with a potent proinflammatory role in human.Resistin leads to decreased expression of nitric oxide (NO) synthase in human coronary artery endothelial cell lines. Considering the known role of NO in migraine pathogenesis, we decided to examine resistin levels in migraine patients and compared it with control group. Methods: Case-control study. In 35 patients with migraine diagnosed based on ICHD-3 and 35 age/sex matched control subjects, serum resistin was checked using ELISA. We excluded subjects with conditions that can cause changes in resistin levels (e.g. Kidney disease, Cardiovascular disease, BMI>30).Results: Resistin serum levels in the group of healthy people was significantly higher than patient group.(P=0.003)Conclusions: It was shown that resistin caused decreased NO production. The role of NO in migraine pathophysiology is well-known. Therefore, decreased serum resistin in the migraine group compared to non-migraine group can be explained and low serum resistin may be used as a biomarker in migraine. It is unclear whether such reduction in resistin level is the reason of disease or the body’s defensive mechanism.Other theory will be role of resistin in increasing the IL1, IL6, TNF which shown in some studies.A prospective study comparing the serum level of resistin, NO, IL1, IL6 and TNFα in patients with migraine, during and in between attacks, will clarify this.
