- W2518151906 abstract "The inhalation of the vapors of chemical substances for the purpose of achieving an intoxicated state is currently quite popular within the adolescent popula- tion. However, this form of substance abuse often receives less attention than more well-known drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol. This paper is intended to be an introduction to the topic of inhalant abuse, including prevalence rates, the types of substances typically abused, their effects on the body, methods of inhalation, symptoms associated with this practice, the risks involved, and finally, the question of physical and psychological addiction. When the topic of substance abuse among adolescents is discussed, drugs such as marijuana, LSD, crack, and amphetamines tend to be- come focal points. One group of substances that is often overlooked or given only marginal attention is generally known as inhalants, a large number of products whose vapors can be inhaled in order to achieve an intoxicated state. The fact that these substances are abused to an equal (or even greater) extent than those drugs men- tioned above (Johnson, O'Malley, & Bachman, 1987; Oetting & Beau- vais, 1990), and yet are generally ignored by the public at large, may suggest that people are unaware of the existence of inhalant abuse, that they are unaware of the wide prevalence of this practice, and/or that they are simply unaware of the hazards involved in the abuse of inhalants." @default.
