- W2519112113 abstract "In the 1860s, most of Rebecca Harding Davis's fiction focused upon the rise of industrial capitalism, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. A notable thematic shift in Davis's writings was evidenced, however, with the 1868 publication of one of her finest short stories, 'In the Market.' significance of that shift is twofold. First, instead of the Atlantic Monthly, where most of her best fiction appeared in the 1860s, she chose Peterson s Magazine as the place of publication for a story that is of the highest quality. lack of critical attention that this story has received is due in part to its publication in this magazine. assumption that such fic tion will not be of interest to literary scho lars often precludes a recognition of the economic basis for many women writers' choices of place of publication. Further, many nineteenth-century women writers recognized the extensive audience they could reach through ladies' magazines. (This latter point was of particular impor tance to Davis in 1870, when she selected Peterson s Magazine as publisher of Put Out of the Way, an expose on the abuses perpetrated nationally in mental health in stitutions.) status that Davis afforded 'In the Market' is also indicated by its authorial designation of By the Author of 'Margret Howth' ; Margret Howth was Davis's first novel, and The Author of 'Margret Howth' was the byline that she used for several years in the Atlantic Monthly. Second, and most important in terms of Davis's fifty-year literary career, 'In the Market' denotes a significant shift in the thematic focus of her fiction. Thereafter, she placed much greater em phasis upon the lives of American women. She would extend and enrich that focus" @default.
