The extensive scope of devices in WSN has varying energy demands. Energy limitation, being the major concern, is efficiently managed using clustering. This involves the need for energy efficiency in heterogeneous WSNs. Effective energy management is handled by optimally choosing the cluster head. Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering (DEEC), Enhanced Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering (EDEEC), Developed Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering (DDEEC) and Balanced Energy Efficient Network Integrated Super Heterogeneous (BEENISH) protocol performs this election process by classifying the nodes into different types and then utilizing them. BEENISH protocol is considered to be the best way to elect a Cluster Head (CH), as it ameliorates the network lifetime up to a certain extent. This paper proposes a modified and improvised algorithm in electing the cluster head and an overall cluster head, which shows drastic improvement in the network lifetime. The proposed modified-BEENISH (m-BEENISH) algorithm is implemented in NS-2 (Network Simulator-2) and the simulated results are compared with the other protocols. An enhancement in the throughput ratio, along with a reduced energy consumption and end-to-end delay provides an overall efficiency of 16.3%.
