- W2519374701 abstract "Introduction: In order to raise conscientiouseness about possible ill effects on human health, information about endocrine disruptors needs to be provided.Lack of knowledge and awareness about the effects of endocrine disruptors on human health is a big issue today. In last 40-50 years breast, prostate, ovarian and thyroid cancers are more and more frequent, along with the number of chronic deseases and malformations. Men suffer from lower sperm quality and women have problems with polycistic ovaries and premature puberty. Endocrine disruptors have a large impact on reproductive function, fetal growth and behavior along with immune, digestive and neurologic systems. Goal: Education can make a big impact on human attitude and readiness to pay attention on different endocrine disruptors thus making their lives better and healthier.Main goal of this research is to investigate a level of education of high school students regarding the exposure and ill effects of endocrine disruptors. It is also important to educate and positively influence them on health preservation mindset. Adopted skills and knowledge make it possible to influence their own health, and that of their families, in a better way.Subjects and methods: This research was done in cooperation with fourth grade high school students of Nursing school Mlinarska in Zagreb, in academic year 2013/2014. There were 126 examinees in total. Descriptive statistics along with Statistica 12 software were used for data analysis. Frequency tables are used to present the data and Wilcoxon test is used for comparison of dependent samples. Results: Before education only one examinee was informed about the importance of endocrine disruptors. After the education 91 examinees were informed about endocrine disruptors and their effects. After the education program it is shown that there is a significant statistical difference for cognitive achievment variable on all levels (knowledge – data remembering, understanding, application and analysis). Big number of examinees, 81 (64,29%) demonstarate higher readiness to change their behavior and habits after the education. Conclusion: Readiness to change in order to protect the health is present, but knowledge is crucial in order to acomplish that process." @default.
