- W2519426810 abstract "Objective: To evaluate medication knowledge and to assess the impact of continuous patient education in improving medication adherence. Design and method: Interventional study was conducted to evaluate the hypertensive patients on hemodialysis of the medication knowledge using validated Medication Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire and their medication adherence behaviour using Brief Medication Questionnaire. Both the questionnaires were administered at the baseline (before start of council), on the 6th week and on the 12th week. Patient receiving their medication regimen at least for the past one month was included in the study. Patients were counseled verbally on their regular dialysis days. Patient education leaflets were distributed to the patients on the first episode of counseling. The responses from the patients were scored in the questionnaires and subjected to analysis using ANOVA for more than two groups comparisons. Results: Total of 40 (more than 65% of male) patients residing urban areas were enrolled in the study with mean age of 45.7 ± 14.9 years. At baseline there was no significant association between age, gender and socioeconomic status with medication knowledge. Baseline score was significantly associated with Qualification (p0.02). The mean MKAQ score at baseline was found to be 49.9 ± 13.9, at 6th week 74.1 ± 12.2 and at 12th week 81.2 ± 10.1. Thus there was a statistically significant (p0.001) increase in MKAQ score from baseline to end of 12th week. There was a significant drop in mean BMQ score for antihypertensives (baseline-3.9 ± 1.9; 6thweek-2.0 ± 1.4; 12thweek-1.2 ± 0.9), vitamin D (baseline-3.8 ± 1.3; 6th week-2.2 ± 1.3; 12th week-1.4 ± 1.0), iron (baseline-3.6 ± 1.3; 6th week-1.7 ± 1.3; 12th week-0.8 ± 1.0) and for Erythropoietin analogue (baseline-2.1 ± 1.6; 6th week-0.8 ± 1.1; 12th week-0.8 ± 1.0) from baseline to end of 12th week, indicating increasing medication adherence. Conclusions: The medication knowledge of the hemodialysis patients was poor at baseline visit. The study emphasized that provision of constant patient education to hypertensive patients undergoing hemodialysis for better retention of medication knowledge of the patients and to improve their adherence." @default.
