- W2520264948 abstract "Objectives: We aimed to describe the content of early abortion method decision aids available in the United States. Methods: Forty-nine decision aids were identified in a larger systematic review and environmental scan. We performed a directed content analysis, following the framework of Hsieh (2005), to analyze the decision aids' information content and presentation based on the method attributes, word choice, women's decision-making role and values clarification approaches. An initial coding structure and resultant themes were developed, then iteratively expanded and refined as more data were analyzed. Results: Descriptions of the method attributes privileged medical information over practical, social (e.g., privacy) and emotional information. Although medically accurate terms were often used to describe the abortion process, emotive words (i.e., pulls the fetus's body apart) or ambiguous words (i.e., rubs the uterus walls) were sometimes used. Inconsistent or inaccurate descriptions of certain aspects of medical abortion (i.e., bleeding, duration) and possible side effects and complications (i.e., infertility) were identified. Subjective claims were sometimes made, notably about the “naturalness,” “privacy” and “control” conferred by medical abortion as though they were fact. The majority of decision aids framed the choice of method as the woman's; however, of the subset that listed factors influencing method choice, “patient preferences” were the least prioritized. Conclusions: Early abortion method decision aids present a broad range of information and typically describe women as having a role in method choice. However, the emphasis on medical attributes, inconsistent and, at times, erroneous language and minimization of patient preferences may undermine quality decision making." @default.
