- W2520910080 abstract "Conservation of vertebrate species is of academic, economic, legal, and moral interest. The U.S. Supreme Court, in 1842, declared that wildlife was to be held in trust for all citizens, and legislation has developed with growing concern for the nation's waning natural resources (Environ. Law Inst. 1977). For example, 1 provision of the National Forest Management Act requires the long-term maintenance of native vertebrate populations (NFMA Regul. 219.29). A difficult question that arises in relation to long-term maintenance of populations is how large must a population be to maintain genetic variability over time (i.e., to remain viable, Gregorius [1980], Soule and Wilcox [1980], Schonewald-Cox et al. [1983]). Too small a population is subject to sudden extirpation by natural disaster, or slower extinction due to the accumulation of deleterious alleles through inbreeding (Ralls and Ballou 1983), while very large populations of long-lived vertebrates may be prohibitively costly to maintain. Because extinction rates increase yearly due to human activities (Frankel 1983), the need for determining minimum viable population levels of vertebrates for management purposes is urgent. Recently Lacava and Hughes (1984) presented an approach to calculating the minimum viable population level of vertebrates and described its application. However, their model included assumptions that cause underestimation of the minimum population size required for birds and mammals. We discuss problems with Lacava and Hughes' (1984) calculations, present an equation better suited for vertebrate populations, and discuss minimum population size as it affects the management of bird and mammal populations." @default.
