- W2520918004 abstract "Using a standard suite of HCO 3 provenance assumptions, new estimates of contemporary atmospheric CO 2 drawdown associated with chemical weathering in three Svalbard glacier basins are presented. Comparison with other glacierized basins reported in the literature shows that CO 2 drawdown fluxes by meltwaters emerging from Svalbard glaciers are low (between 110 and 1400 kg C km -2 year -1 ) compared with temperate glaciers (e.g. 2500 kg C km -2 year -1 at Haut Glacier d'Arolla). The difference most probably reflects the low specific discharge of Arctic Svalbard glaciers as well as contrasts in the relative proportions of the different proton sources which drive chemical weathering reactions. Observations taken significant distances downstream from ice masses in Svalbard and Iceland are also discussed. These indicate that the proglacial region has a potentially large effect upon basinwide CO 2 drawdown due to carbonation reactions occurring in aquifers, open channels and cryotic soils." @default.
