There are reasons to resist attributing this claim to Dewey. First, philosophical accounts and defenses of open-mindedness usually appeal to the intrinsic value of traditional epistemological goals.1 Secondly, the concept of a virtue is traditionally tied to certain fixed notions which are contrary to Pragmatism. In order to dispel scepticism and provide the necessary background for my later discussion, I first provide some very general suggestions as to how the notion of open-mindedness and the general concept of a virtue should be understood in a pragmatist context. Then I argue that Pragmatism has reasons indigenous to its philosophy to consider open-mindedness and courage as complementary virtues. Moreover, the importance of these virtues becomes revitalized under a pragmatist view of experience." @default.
