- W2521106321 abstract "The frequency of occurrence of clusters of limber pine trees was studied. Results indicated the majority of seedlings originated in clusters. A hypoth- esis that clusters of seedlings are the result of seed caching by small animals is proposed. Limber pine (Pinus flexilis James) in the Rocky Mountains is often found growing on extreme sites, especially exposed windward slopes in the subalpine vegetation zone. On many of these extreme sites the species develops into physiographic climax stands. Establishment of limber pine on extreme sites can be important in subsequent establish- ment and development of the more common species of subalpine trees on the lee slopes, because these stands frequently appear to, serve as windbreaks for well developed stands of the dominant vegetation, Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii (Parry) Engelm.)--subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.) or lodgepole pine (P. contorta Dougl.). Limber pine trees are often characterized by profuse branching and a multiple-stemmed appearance. Examination of mature, apparently multiple-stemmed trees shows that many are actually adjoining indi- viduals which have become established in close proximity. Clusters of seedlings are also common in stands of this species. Germination of limber pine seeds stored in food caches of small an- imals offers a hypothesis for the origin of clusters of seedlings and the close association of trunks or mature trees. This hypothesis was the subject of a study at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, Uni- versity of Colorado, 16 km northwest of Nederland, Colorado, at" @default.
