- W2521262997 abstract "In general, both medical and psychosocial outcomes for living donors are favorable, but there are long-term problems attributable to donation (e.g. rehospitalization, increased rates of preeclampsia during pregnancy, financial burden). Recognizing potential, and potentially modifiable, problems at the time of donor evaluation enables better donor selection and more thorough counseling. Awareness of any identified risk factors predonation enables not only better donor selection and more thorough counseling but also careful planning for postdonation care. Even when the data suggest a relatively small increased risk associated with any single known risk factor, having multiple risk factors simultaneously can further increase a donor’s risk. Underappreciated is the fact that donation-related events can also lead to postdonation medical (e.g. hernia) and psychosocial (e.g. financial) problems. Currently, in the United States, no standard of care exists for donors who develop postdonation problems; similarly, no well-developed mechanism exists to financially cover donation-related problems." @default.
