The high demand and inadequate food supply have inclined communities of every sector to have a pivotal role in meeting global food demand. In a step toward resolving the issue, plant biologists have made significant efforts to develop plants with higher yields of primary metabolites as well as secondary metabolites, with a reduced nitrogen requirement and the ability to cope with regular changes occurring in the atmosphere in the form of biotic and abiotic stresses. Because chloroplasts are the key compartment in the plant cell that influence primary productivity, a deep understanding of chloroplasts’ metabolic events and their plasticity, source limitation, and sink strength is important for their optimization in relation to environmental conditions and improvements in crop yield. Several efforts have been made through plant metabolic engineering by targeting genes associated with chloroplast metabolism. In this chapter, efforts have been made to discuss and summarize chloroplastic key events that have been modified to improve crop yield and sustained survival strength in changing and challenging environments." @default.
