- W2521776384 abstract "A wide variety of immunologic responses to foods are detectable by in vitro assays. Many studies have shown significant differences in the results of in vitro immunologic assays between individuals tolerant and intolerant of specific foods. These studies provide insights into the pathogenesis of adverse food reactions. In spite of the significant differences between the tolerant and intolerant individuals, none of the immunologic tests described are highly sensitive or specific diagnostic tests for food-induced reactions. Given the isolated information of a positive test, a physician cannot predict with great accuracy whether the person will have a reaction following ingestion of the food or the specific type of adverse reaction the person will experience. At present, in vitro tests are useful adjuncts to the diagnosis of adverse reactions to foods, but they must be interpreted cautiously by a knowledgeable physician in light of the clinical history." @default.
