- W2523014795 abstract "The success of measures for the restoration of disturbed phytocenoses for the protection of species is among others dependent on quality and quantity of dispersal units present in the soil. In a research project for the reestablishment of species-rich litter meadows from forage meadows the seed bank of some grassland-types in the foreland of the Alps (Angelico-Cirsietum, Filipendula tall-herb-community, Gentiano-Molinietum, Primulo-Schoenetum) has been studied. This happened by counting the seedlings in artificially bare sample plots in the field („Freilandversuch“) as well as in regularly disturbed soil samples from the experimental sites in a vegetation hall („Experiment“). Additionally the seed production of some typic plants from litter meadows was determined. The greatest numbers of viable seeds were found beneath forage meadows (up to 11,000 m−2) ; they belonged largely to typic forage plants, herbs as well as grasses. The number of viable seeds beneath litter meadows were by far lower (2,000 m−2 or less). The seedling numbers in the experiment were two- to fifteenfold higher than in the field, except for two sample plots. Species which are neither found in the actual vegetation of the forage meadows nor in the field but produce considerable number of seedlings in the experiment may probably be attributed to a persistent seed bank that can give remarks on the formerly present vegetation of litter meadow even after 15 years of intensive agricultural management, as far as their seeds are not imported from the environment. This concerns different Carex-species, Juncus articulatus, Luzula campestris, Calluna vulgaris and others, some of which are known as light-requiring for germination. But evidently some of them remain dormant even in light, because seedling numbers in the field are low compared to the seed numbers produced in the same sites. Species with evidently more seedlings in the field can be attributed to a transient seed bank (e.g. Anthoxanthum odoratum, Plantago lanceolata, but also less competitive species from litter meadows as Parnassia palustris and Primula farinosa). They produce large seed numbers in the actual vegetation cover and are able to colonize open patches in a short time. The behaviour of Schoenus ferrugineus, Potentilla erecta and Viola palustris can not definitely be assessed. Probably differing properties of the soil surface are responsible for affecting their germination essentially. The results are discussed shortly with respect to their importance for restoration projects." @default.
