- W252326239 abstract "Motivating to master the basics in any field is a demanding task. In technical education, while the direct benefit--almost certain, well-paying employment--is obvious, the challenge is to keep students' interest high. Absent that, the technical workforce lacks skilled replenishment, and the possibility of being overtaken by competition looms large. The United States is not alone in this challenge; it is being met on many fronts. What's Abroad? In Slovenia, secondary school technology teacher Branko Jerie has discovered that his are highly motivated by hands-on instruction in CAD/CAM/CNC. Jerie's enthusiasm is contagious, spreading among his students, and empowering a cadre of his Central European colleagues. Jerie, a diplomate in Mechanical Engineering, serves at the Tehniski solski center Nova Gorica--the Technical School Center of Nova Gorica (TSCNG) [Photo 2] in the Republic of Slovenia. Grown from the ruins of World War II, Nova Gorica lies by the Italian border, between the Alps and the sea. The city's economic development targets both restructuring existing industry; promoting of small businesses, particularly via the introduction of new, environment-friendly technology; exploiting its border location; and ensuring the flow of capital. A Approach Jerie's journey along the path of Nova Gorica's economic plan began in the 2002-2003 school year when TSCNG bought a production-quality CNC machine. Presented with that opportunity, Jerie wanted to do more than just teach. He wanted to provide life skills for his students, and the tools to earn good wages. had some simple educational CAD/CAM programs but they were not powerful enough, Jerie recalls. Surrounded by local and area industry, he visited companies that used sophisticated CAD/CAM/CNC software to compare their different programs. Jerie learned from on-the-floor technicians about the design and production advantages that powerful and precise software gave their companies. After that I arranged a presentation of different CAD/CAM programs for technical schools. There I met Rok Mikuz from Camincam d.o, a Mastercam[R] reseller. We talked about the cost to invest in precision software as an educational institution, and I made sure of their technical and educational support. I reported back to my director, Egon Pipan, and we decided to buy our first seat in December of 2002. The First Step There were no Slovenian-language training materials for the CAD/CAM/CNC software. With significant help from Mikuz, Jerie challenged himself not only to learn a new CAD/CAM program but also to translate the program manual into the Slovene language. Mr. Mikuz had the product knowledge, and I knew what I wanted to teach and how to do it, Jerie explains. Our manual contains 2-D and 3-D drawing and toolpathing units, together with examples. I wrote a first copy for myself and then I gave copies of the handbook to my students. [See www.mastercamedu.com, click on Reading List, scroll to Slovenian Documentation link. With group-selected goals before them, mastering the basics of CAD/CAM/CNC became a means to a personal end, rather than a routine classroom task. Though it seems like reinventing the wheel to us, this curriculum format had not yet been implemented at TSCNG. Jerie continues, started choosing a project. I paid close attention to my students skills and grade level, as well as the technology that was available in our lab. Then together we made the first simple product, a customized chess piece. …" @default.
