- W2524747019 abstract "The main difficulty in using horizontal bulb pumps is the problem of starting. It is known that the torque on the shaft of an axial-flow pump is maximum with zero delivery and minimum at a zero head. Therefore, starting of axial-flow pumps at a zero head is a standard procedure. To accomplish such starting the standard vertical axial-flow pumps have siphon pressure pipes. When using horizontal pumps the pressure pipe of the pump to facilitate starting is connected to a basin which is separated from the upper pool by a gate [3]. The gate in the basin is closed before starting, and the water in the basin is set at the level of the lower pool. The pump is started at a zero head; after filling the basin the gate in it is opened and the water enters the upper pool. Obvious, for large axial-flow pumps with impeller diameters greater than 4 m such a solution is not economical. The horizontal arrangement of the impeller hampers the expulsion of water, which is widely used for starting vertical reversible turbine--pump units. To be able to expel the water it is necessary to install two vane gates -- in front of and behind the impeller -- and also to have a bypass with a gate valve for bypassing the water from the impeller chamber to the lower pool. The presence of these devices complicates and increases the cost of the pump; furthermore, a second gate (on the suction inlet) makes the energy and cavitation qualities of the machine worse. Thezefore, horizontal axial-flow pumps have to be started in a filled chamber with zero delivery. The problem arises of reducing the hydrodynamic torque during rotation of the impeller in water when the gate valve is closed, i.e., Q = O. The indicated decrease of torque can be achieved by folding the blades until they touch and by the optimal arrangement and selection of the design of the shut-off device. The authors investigated the torques on the impeller of an OP-5 axial-flow pump with modified vanes adapted for operating in a turbine regime. The experimental device simulated the pump unit with a closed gate arranged either on the inlet (in front of the impeller) or on the outlet (behind the rigid-vane straightening apparatus). Figure 1 shows the torque characteristics obtained for the designed vane angle and with completely folded vanes in configurations with a gate on the inlet and outlet. It is seen that folding the vanes substantially reduces the torque on the impeller, and a change in the location of the gate does not produce a perceptible effect with completely folded vanes. Investigations showed that despite the considerable reduction of the torque on the pump shaft on folding its vanes this measure alone is not enough for making it possible to start the axial-flow pump in a filled chamber when Q = o.
