- W2525003896 abstract "A cold flow study of the 50 MW{sub t} coal-fired MHD combustor second stage was conducted as part of an investigation of localized nozzle wear observed during MHD prototypical power train design verification testing. The primary objectives of the cold flow study were to (1) characterize the basic flow and mixing patterns within the second stage and nozzle, (2) investigate the effect of injector slag growths on second stage mixing, (3) investigate alternate iron oxide and secondary oxygen injector configurations, and (4) confirm second stage mixing performance with a modified nozzle contour. Tests were conducted with a 1/3 scale, transparent flow model of the 50 MW{sub t} MHD combustor. Cold flow model results indicate that the observed slag growths at the oxygen injector frame have a significant impact on second stage mixing patterns, particularly in the lower portion of the duct where iron oxide slurry is normally injected. By externally shutting off the four corner oxygen ports, the iron oxide slurry injection region was effectively converted from an oxygen-rich to a fuel-rich zone. A number of alternate iron oxide injection locations were also evaluated. The best location appears to be along the lower sidewall just downstream of oxygen injection. Visualmore » observations also indicated that the penetration and dispersion of the iron oxide slurry is particularly sensitive to the velocity of the annular purge flow. Finally, cold flow mixing patterns for the modified nozzle contour were determined to be quite similar to the baseline nozzle contour. Results obtained during subsequent hot-fired testing at the CDIF appear to support the basic results of the cold flow study. The observed wear rate has been reduced considerably after the iron oxide slurry injectors were relocated to a position just downstream of second stage oxygen injection. Finally, combustor and channel performance with the 10-port injector has been comparable to the baseline 14-port injector.« less" @default.
