- W2525300904 abstract "Summary Under the conditions of air pollution, the soil in the drainage area of the stem flow water of beeches shows a lower base saturation and an accumulation of heavy metals, especially Pb and Cu. In all three beechwood types investigated (limestone-, loess- and moderhumus-beechwood) the trunk base areas showed a partial nitrification inhibition. This effect decreases with increasing soil depth, like the changes in base saturation and heavy metal accumulation. The differences in nitrification capacity between trunk base area and normal stand are highest in limestone-beechwoods and decrease in loess- and moderhumus-beechwoods. It is assumed, that the inhibition of nitrification in the trunk base areas is caused by changes in soil chemistry, which effect a change in autotrophic and heterotrophic nitrifiers. A trend in respect of differences in the nitrogen mineralization capacity of trunk base areas and normal stands – demonstrated with a laboratory incubation experiment – is not detectable. The mineralization of phosphorus is with one exception lower in the trunk base areas." @default.
