- W2527161420 abstract "I am now in my 25th year of teaching, and I haven't gotten it right yet. I am a decent teacher, not a great one; but I keep trying to get better. This urge to improve is strong in me perhaps because there's so much room for improvement. This drive is what keeps me interested in teaching; I can't wait to try again, to attempt a better way of teaching about meiosis or renal function, to improve the way I conduct discussions in the classroom, and to come up with new and challenging activities for my students. Over the past year, I've had a number of opportunities to grow as a teacher. Most of them are related to the Center of Teaching and Learning which the University set up in early 1994. At the time of its inception, I must admit that I was less than excited about the Center. I saw it as another administrative office developed more for its PR potential than as an agency for real change on a campus that, to put it charitably, can be called conservative in its approaches to teaching. I had gone to high school with Julie, but I had spoken to her only a few times since she began teaching at St. John's, so we could not be termed close friends.
