- W2527542880 abstract "It was the aim of the present experiments to examine whether in a thermophilic species like maize (Zea mays L.) the adaptation of root to shoot translocation of N to the growth-related demand is inhibited by suboptimal root zone temperatures (RZT), particularly in plants supplied with ammonium (NH 4 + ), where assimilation into amino-N must occur in the roots. Plants were grown in nutrient solution at 12°C and 24°C RZT, and N (1 mM) supplied as nitrate (NO 3 - ) or NH 4 + . At both RZT, plants were grown with their shoot base, including the apical shoot meristem and the zone of leaf extension, either at air temperature (24°C/20°C day/night) or at 12°C. At both RZT, shoot growth was inhibited by growing the plants at 12°C shoot base temperature (low SBT), while root growth was not affected. Thus the growth-related demand of the shoot for nutrients per unit of roots was markedly decreased at low SBT. This decrease in the shoot demand was not associated with an impairment of the sugar supply to the roots. At 24°C RZT, the N translocation rates in the xylem exudate of decapitated plants declined within the first day after lowering the growth-related shoot demand. At 12°C RZT, N translocation rates were initially lower than at 24°C RZT, and adaptation of N translocation to an altered growth-related shoot demand was delayed. In the long-term (5-8 days), however, N translocation rates at 12°C RZT and high SBT were similar as or higher than at 24°C RZT, regardless of the form of N supply (NO 3 - or NH 4 + ). It is concluded, that shoot growth of maize at suboptimal RZT is not limited by the physiological ability of the roots to provide N for the shoot, even when N assimilation must take place in the roots exposed to low temperature." @default.
