Despite the tendency for the more efficient species to eliminate from the system the less effi cient species,1 healthy aquatic ecosystems usually contain an extremely wide variety of species. The species diversity has been considered to be of great ecological im portance, particularly in maintaining the stability of the ecosystem.2 Maintenance of species diversity should therefore be considered a major goal of water resource management policies. To achieve this goal, one must preserve the environmental conditions that enable competitor species to coexist. Natural environmental varia tions, both in time and space, tend to pre vent any species from having an advantage in a wide area over a period of time long enough to eliminate its competitors. Thus, natural environmental variations contribute to species diversity and should be main tained as far as is possible. Conditions within tidal flat areas are uniquely different from the conditions found within the deeper estuarine waters. It follows from the above discussion that these differences are of ecological impor tance as they contribute to the species di versity within estuarine and coastal regions. Despite their importance, tidal flat areas have been significantly affected by land filling, diking, dredging, and numerous forms of pollution. A study of sampling procedures used by regulatory agencies, water quality standards, mathematical models of estuarine water quality, and the water pollution literature indicates that, with notable exceptions, the quality of the interstitial and overlying waters of tidal flat areas has been all but neglected. It is the purpose of this paper to dis cuss some of the important aspects of tidal flat systems. Much of the discussion also pertains to estuarine benthal deposits and their overlying waters in general." @default.
